Work on the construction of the palace began in 1894, and a grand opening ceremony took place in 1897. The building was named after Sultan Abdul of Selangor at the time, and whose name is carved into the stone foundation of the palace.

It is thanks to it that the palace has become one of the most recognizable landmarks of Kuala Lumpur and its unique calling card. Interestingly , due to its striking resemblance to one of the widely known symbols of Great Britain, the clock tower of the Sultan Abdul Samad Palace is called the Kuala Lumpur Big Ben.
