If you have a website or a blog on WordPress, you have probably come across two terms on more than one occasion, which in most cases do not clearly refer to or understand what they are.
I'm referring to pingbacks and trackbacks .
What is this that I have seen in my WordPress admin panel and that appears as if they are comments? Are they good or bad for SEO? Does accepting them benefit or harm me?
I don't want these doubts to torment you ever again.

What is a pingback?
The term pingback comes from a basic networking tool called “ping.”
“Ping” is a command supported by all operating systems that allows us to know if a computer, server or any other type of host is active.
If you want to try it, just open a command console in your operating system and put:
ping 8.8.8.8
If you get a response… it means that Google servers are up and running (8.8.8.8 is the IP address of those servers).
You can do the same with any IP address within your network (your router's, another computer's, etc.) to check if you are really connected to that host.
But hey, this is just a curiosity. Let's get to what interests us.
In the case of pingback, the concept is similar but not identical.
Pingback is born from the need for the author of a blog or website to know that someone else is talking about an article he or she has written.
Or, in other words, it allows you to know if someone is automatically linking content from your website on another website.
I'll show you better how this works in WordPress with a practical example:
1) I write a post on my blog
2) You write a post on your blog and, for whatever reason, you mention my post by including a link in your article.
3) Your WordPress system sends a pingback to my blog.
4) My WordPress receives the pingback.
5) I approve of showing (or not) your pingback in my comments.
Beware! Pingbacks also work within our own website. That is, if I link from my site to another post published on my site, a pingback will also be generated (which, by the way, is usually quite annoying).
What is a trackback?
This concept is somewhat different from pingback, although the goal is the same: to inform someone that you have linked to something related to another user's website.
