After all, what is the certificate of origin?
As we saw previously, the certificate of origin is a document created to attest to the origin of a product that has been exported. It is required by some countries and is validated by international institutions, such as chambers of commerce , among other bodies.

Common certificate of origin
This type of certificate of origin serves only to attest to the origin of the goods, but does not grant any benefits to the importer. They are normally completed by the exporter and authenticated by local chambers of commerce, as previously mentioned.

Certificate of Origin Form A
On the other hand, the Form A certificate of origin, or form A, is a special type of certificate and, in addition to attesting to the origin of a given product, it also grants benefits to the exporter.

Basically, this type of certificate is only granted in cases provided for by the General System of Preferences. In Brazil, it is issued free of charge to Microenterprises and Small Businesses (EPPs), in accordance with Decree 3,474 and Law 9,841/99.

What are the benefits of the certificate of origin?
As suggested in the introduction, despite being yet another bureaucratic rule, the certificate of origin can indeed bring a series of benefits to those who issue it and remain in good standing.

To better understand the benefits, let’s take a look at three of the main ones. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

Regularize the company's situation
When required, certificates of origin must be regularized by the organization. Therefore, one of the main benefits of keeping the certificates correctly documented is the regularization of the company's situation, as well as the situation of the goods, of course.

Get fee exemptions or reductions
Imported products tend to be expensive for any type of company, however, when the Form A certificate of origin is correctly documented, we can obtain a series of tax reductions or even exemptions. It all depends on the trade agreements that exist between the exporting country and the importer.

Complete the documentation for free
Finally, as seen previously, the certificate of origin can be issued free of charge by Microenterprises and Small Businesses. This means that, even when required, these organizations can remain in good standing without having to bear any type of costs.
