Device usage preferences change depending on the time of day for each user. From a smartphone in the morning to a desktop version and finally a tablet. And this makes sense because the user's needs are different at any given time.

Unlike isolated mobile websites, responsive landing pages adapt the design to the viewing environment by using fluid grids based on flexible imagery and proportions.
Basically, while adaptive websites are tailored to specific screen sizes, responsive websites are designed using percentages of the total screen of the device they are being viewed on. Because responsive landing page elements are coded to take up a certain percentage of a screen, they will only take up that portion of the screen regardless of the device size.
